Within a 15-mile radius, the city of Liverpool and The Wirral Peninsula offer a unique and contrasting diversity, guaranteed to satisfy all tastes. Liverpool is in the midst of a dramatic renaissance, boosted by the official designation of its docklands as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations) in 2004. In 2007 the city celebrated its 800th birthday and in 2008 is currently indulging in the prestigious status of European Capital of Culture.
The city's architecture is internationally recognised, with over 2,500 listed buildings, more than any city apart from London. The 'Cultural Quarter' is home to the majestic neo-classical Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Library, the World Museum Liverpool and St. George's Hal. In addition the city boasts two architecturally significant cathedrals.
For the last century the instantly recognisable skyline has served as a visible symbol of the city's prestige as a thriving port and international gateway, today one of Europe's busiest and most successful cargo-handling ports.
The city is host to more galleries and national museums than any other city in the United Kingdom, apart from London, most notably the Tate Liverpool, exhibiting world-class modern art and FACT centre, serving touring multimedia exhibitions.
At night the city is alive with an abundant selection of performing arts venues, restaurants and nightclubs. The city continues to build on it's enviable musical reputation, initiated by the phenomenal success of the Beatles in the 1960's, and since producing some of the most successful performers on the popular music scence.
The heart of the city offers a mixture of well-known high street names and independent boutiques, whilst the centre's newest shopping venue, the Met Quarter, and Cavern Walks house a host of premier designer names.
Finally, Liverpool is proud owner of two premiership football teams, Liverpool F.C (statistically the most successful English football club of all time) and Everton F.C. The Grand National, one of the most famous events in the international horse racing calendar, is held at Aintree racecourse anually.
Should you opt to escape the hustle and bustle of city life a short trip across the River Mersey transports you to the picturesque Wirral Peninsula with it's stunning natural beauty, historic towns and builldings, country parks, coastline, rural villages, great shopping and dining, sports facilities, outdoor pursuits and over 75 miles of rights of way.
Birkenhead has recently been identified as one of the Northwest's most important historic towns. Visit Birkenhead Priory, St. Mary's Tower and Shore Road pumping Station or take a short trip to the award winning Port Sunlight village.
Towards the West and South the Peninsula becomes increasingly rural. The Wirral Country Park and The 12 mile-long Wirral Way, popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders, offer breathtaking views over the Dee Estuary to the Clwydian Hills in Wales. For ardent Nature lovers the Nature reserves at Heswall, Thurstaston and Dibbinsdale are a must. A visit to Hilbre Island is highly recommended, with it's famous dinosaur footprint and resident offshore seal colony. On a warm summers day what could be more inviting than a trip to Parkgate to sample their famous home-made ice-cream.
Surrounded by water the Wirral is renowned for it's water sports, with seven sailing clubs and marine lakes at West Kirby and New Brighton. In 2006 The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake hosted the famous Open Championship followed by the European Sandyachting Championships in 2007.
